Shell and MEF Partner Again to Raise Money for Local Schools

$50,000 raised, nearly 700 runners, over 200 volunteers and ONE GREAT CAUSE! The 7th Annual Shell Shell/Martinez Education Foundation 5k Run-Walk for Education occurred on Saturday October 3 in downtown Martinez, and the pre-run Pasta Feed, Friday night at the Shell Clubhouse. Preliminary fundraising totals show approximately $50,000 raised for the Martinez Education Foundation, the largest total in the Run’s history. Kevin Searles and Noreen Searles, both of Martinez, are this year’s men’s and women’s overall winners. There were 589 participants in all and over 100 volunteers in this year’s event.
The Run began in 2003, with the goal of rallying the community in support of the schools, leveraging the business community in support of the schools, and promoting health and wellness. It the hallmark community event of the Shell Martinez Refinery. The company matches the first $10,000 in sponsorships and every dollar that comes in for registrations and the Pasta Feed.
“We are very proud that this year’s run is the best ever,” said Shell Spokesman Steve Lesher. “To see so many people come out and support this cause in this economy is awesome. The event just keeps growing.”
